Foundations Practice Run
When you design and draft patterns, you have a clear picture of how the finished garment comes together, but a design is only as good as its assembly. Marking your patterns accurately ensures success for whoever sews them next, whether that is a customer making it for the first time or you returning to the project a year from now. This hands-on exercise highlights how much critical information you can embed directly into your pattern pieces to make cutting and sewing as seamless and joyful as possible.
Here are the things you'll accomplish by following the instruction sheet provided below:
-
Set Edge Allowances & Boundaries:
- Default Seams: Verify a baseline 1/2" (13 mm) seam allowance to all standard seams.
- Cut on Fold: Designate the Front Bodice Center Front (CF) as Cut on Fold and set its seam allowance to 0.
- Neckline: Set the neckline seam allowance to 3/8" (10 mm).
- Armholes & Sleeve Cap: Set both the bodice armhole and the sleeve cap seam allowances to 1/4" (6 mm).
- Sleeve Hem: Add a 1" (25 mm) hem allowance to the lower sleeve edge. Include a 1/4" (6 mm) fold-under turn.
- Side Seams & Sleeve Underarm Seam (French Seams): Set these seam allowances to 5/8" (16 mm) to accommodate a French seam.
-
Mark French Seam Construction Guidelines:
- On the 5/8" (16 mm) allowances for the bodice side seams and sleeve underarm seams, indicate the two-step construction lines:
- 1st Stitch Line: 3/8" (10 mm) from the black sewing line (wrong sides together). (1/4" (6 mm) from the raw cut edge.)
- Trim Line: 1/8" (3 mm) outside the first stitch line. (Note: The final structural seamline represents the 2nd stitch line taken right sides together at 3/8" / 10 mm).
- On the 5/8" (16 mm) allowances for the bodice side seams and sleeve underarm seams, indicate the two-step construction lines:
-
Add Construction Notches & Alignment Marks:
- Armhole Notches: Measure 3" (76 mm) up along the armhole curve from the underarm junction (side seam) on both the bodice and the sleeve. Add a single notch for the front and a double notch for the back.
- Pinning Marks: Place alignment balance marks on the Center Back seam to ensure even feeding during assembly. Place another on the Underarm seam to match to the sewn dart.
-
Add Internal Markings & Directional Guides:
- Grainlines: Draw straight grainlines parallel to Center Back on the back bodice, and along the central vertical axis of the sleeve.
- Staystitching: Mark directional staystitching arrows along the front and back necklines, pointing from the shoulder/neck intersection down toward Center Front and Center Back.
-
Record Drafting & Fit Metrics:
- Sleeve Ease: Measure the seamlines of the sleeve cap and the combined bodice armholes. Calculate and record the total cap ease.
- Neckline Circumference: Measure and record the finished front and back neckline lengths (excluding seam allowances) for future collar drafting.
-
Add Identification Labels & Branding:
- Pattern Labels: Label each piece with:
- Piece name (e.g., Bodice Front, Bodice Back, Sleeve)
- Measurement set used
- Date drafted
- Cutting instructions (e.g., Cut 1 on Fold, Cut 1 Pair)
- Logo: Position your company logo on each pattern piece for a professional presentation.
- Pattern Labels: Label each piece with:

Clear, thoughtful notations elevate pattern quality and make the construction process seamless. Taking a deliberate approach to line styling and visual callouts ensures your designs are instantly readable for whoever cuts and sews them.
For example, when a design uses variable seam allowances, such as a 3/8″ (10 mm) neckline and a 1/4″ (6 mm) armhole, you can assign distinct line colors or dash styles to visually separate those edges at a glance. You are never limited to standard default presets.
PatternMaker Pro lets you build custom line styles tailored to your workflow or brand identity. Choose from over 16 million colors using the full system color spectrum and combine them with ten distinct dash patterns to create precise, informative, and professional pattern finishes.
